Despite the use of this terminology in a variety of disciplines that claim no common theoretical ground -- the history of religion, Marxism and positive sociology, psychoanalysis and the psychiatry of sexual deviance, philosophy -- there is a common configuration of themes. Four themes that consistently inform the idea of a fetish are: (1) the untranscended materiality, (2) the historicality of its origin: rising from a singular event that creates a fixation, (3) the dependence of the fetish for its meaning and value on a particular order of social relations, and (4) the active relation of the fetish object to the living body of the individual. End-products to which the word ‘fetish’ has been applied cannot be understood simply as special kinds of objects. Rather, they reveal a combination of anthropromorphization, a fusion of symbol with meaning, and an ambiguous relationship of control between person and object. Following this sequence, what we might loosely call “fetishization” begins with a shift from the balance of signifier and signified towards ‘thing in itself’. This makes a degree of sense if we think of fetishism as an excessive belief in the symbols we make, or rather a denial of the fact that they are symbols. The fetish expresses the desire to take these symbols literally, insisting they not just "mean," but "be." In many ways, it functions as a kind of materialistic idealism by replacing the physiological with the ideal, the "reality" with the "image," and the signified with the signifier. <img Remote Release Photography; Self Portraits A mirror image is a reflected duplication of an object that appears identical but reversed; in a sense, all mirror images are false to begin with - distorted. Perhaps one does not see themselves in a mirror, but another image, a projection that is not based in reality. At the same time that a mirror image makes possible the knowledge of oneself, it makes possible a sort of alienation: to see one's self as if it was an other. In this sense, we are torn from our self and the image in the mirror prepares us for another alienation - the alienation from others who have only this exterior image of us.

Mimicry, as opposed to copying, produces an assimilation of one's self to that of another through emulating, adapting, and reworking one's perception and understanding of the original. To be an imitation, there must be a clearly perceptible difference from the original: the imitation is faithful in one or more senses, but not for all: it resembles a single isolated perception, not the complete reality. The problem faced by individuals is that mimesis, left unchecked, actually causes a loss of identity: the cycle that occurs, through the imitation of behavior and retaliation, starts to cause a breakdown of boundaries until even distinguishing the self from the other becomes less clear. This is a framing of reality that announces that what is contained within the frame is simply not real - thus the more “real” the impersonation, the more fraudulent it becomes. Impersonation is interesting because you put something of yourself into it; you assume the facade of another and you don’t disappear, you remain you, underneath.
